Art Room News
Greetings! Welcome to our NWEL Mountie Art blog! I just wanted to give you a rundown of how art works in our building. Students have art with me, Mrs. Crandell, every 4th day of school for 40 minutes. In that time, we introduce new artists, art movements, mediums, techniques and art skills. Students create a variety of finished artworks in different mediums. All student artwork is displayed in the hallways of NWEL for students, staff and visitors to enjoy, is posted on this blog and is also kept in student portfolios until the end of the year. When it comes closer to our art show, students will go through their portfolios and choose their favorite and next pieces to display. After the art show, all work, displayed and not, will return home with students.
Thank you so much for visiting! Be sure to come back to see all the awesome things we are creating!!! Feel free to leave comments too- students love to hear input from someone who isn't me :)

Welcome Back MOUNTIE NAtion!!
The 2016-2017 school year is in full swing and we are already creating amazing art in Room 404!!! (Grade level projects are posted under the grade level tab to the left) I am excited to have a whole new batch of 3rd graders at NWEL and to see all the returning faces that I've missed this summer!!
If you are new to art at NWEL here is how our blog works :)
This is the home page where you can find information pertaining to all students at NWEL. In the future it will have our art fundraiser information, updates to our art program and exciting events news.
On the left, each grade level has a tab- the grade level page is where you can find detailed project information on past and current projects. I try to post pictures of our process and some sneak peeks of finished pieces.
Below the grade level gallery tabs, each individual teacher has a tab where I will post pictures of all finished pieces for that classroom. I do not post student names due to privacy rules but post an image of all student work that is completed.
As always any donations of hand sanitizer and tissue to the art room are appreciated as we do our best to keep germs from spreading. With over 750 kids sharing materials, we can become a place for germs to hang out.
I look forward to another wonderful year at NWEL and I can't wait for you all to see our amazing artists at work!!

Creepy Carrots Take Over NWEL!!!
There are strange, creepy visitors at NWEL. our school seems to be overrun with creepy carrots. After reading the Caldecott-winning book, Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds to classes at the end of classes throughout the year, many students are sure that the ART room has something to do with our visitors. I'm not sure where they came from, but their appearance has caused a buzz in the air and an overwhelming demand for the book. This piece of literature has amazing illustrations and is a great art room book- as we have learned about emphasis, color schemes and mood from reading it, looking at it and discussing it. Check out our creepy visitors below! And keep an eye for creepy carrots!!
A very special thanks!!!!
And THE art room needs your help!
First, I am excited to announce that our ART room was awarded a grant from the Northwest Educational Foundation! Thank you NEF!!!! Our grant is for supplies for an upcoming recycled art project this spring! ART students at NWEL will take donated bottle caps and create large outdoor murals! The NEF has generously given funds to purchase large sheet of plywood, paint and outdoor, heavy duty adhesive. Thanks again NEF for giving us an opportunity to create awesome art for NWEL and its visitors!!
On another note- the ART room is now in need of even more bottle caps! We will take any size and any color (with the exception of clear...we have plenty). We will take milk caps, detergent caps, juice caps, pop caps, even shampoo, conditioner and lotion caps!!!! Please just make sure they are clean and dry! Please help our vision become a reality! Any donated caps can be sent to the office marked for Mrs. Crandell or sent in with students, who may drop them off anytime :) Thank you for supporting the arts at Northwest!!!

Welcome to 2015!
2015 brings exciting times in the art room! Now that routines, expectations and material introductions are old news, we move into a more relaxed environment that lends itself to more creative freedom, experimentation and student-led learning. Cross-curricular projects will take center stage in Room 404 and the pieces are more exciting than ever! Check back often to see the amazing things we are doing in grades 3-5 in the Mountie Nation!
We are northwest!
Go Mounties!
ART 3 gets into the season!
Over the course of our school year there are several half days where our schedules give us flex time with a specific grade level. This year, my grade level is 3rd grade. On these half days, I like to do special projects that enhance the climate of the building and give our hallways bursts of color. For the half day before Thanksgiving, ART 3 students painted super large, modern, graphic Christmas trees to decorate our lobby for our upcoming Holiday Family Night. This cooperative project was a great way to get in a review of paintbrush technique, painting clean, crisp edges and a chance to unwind and have fun!
Back Up and Running!!
After dealing with some technical difficulties, I think we are all set to update the art website!!!! Starting tomorrow, you can see the rest of the Los Dias de Los Muertos projects and get caught up on our newest project (which we are finishing this week). Thanks for the patience and I will work my hardest to get us all caught by week's end.
Seeking Art Room Volunteers!
Mrs. Crandell is looking for art room volunteers once a month to help put up and take down artwork around our building. This is a flexible volunteer opportunity to help keep our school looking beautiful! If you are interested, please email Mrs. Crandell at [email protected] or click the button below.
free choice art day
Free choice art day is a great day in the art room! Classes get free choice art day as a reward for being their very best while in the art room. Each time a class comes to the art room they have the opportunity to earn a star for being their higher selves and awesome artists. When a class earns 6 stars they get to have free choice art day or pick your own seat week. This is a great incentive to encourage awesome ART behavior and let the students be creative. Below area some pictures from our first round of free choice art day.
celebrating international dot day at nwel
International Dot Day was Monday, September 15. This day is a worldwide day to recognize the very special message of Peter Reynold's book, The Dot. In the book, a young girl named Vashti feels uninspired and incompetent in art. Her teacher tells her "Make and mark and see where it takes you." This simple phrase send Vashti soaring with confidence as she creates more dots in different scales and colors.
This message is especially inspiring to young artists in the room , but we also talked about how you can make your mark on the world by committing one kind act and see what happens to yourself and those around you. To remind of us of this important message, all NWEL students created Dot-inspired artwork. See each grade level page to view our projects in progress and get a project description . Visit the main grade level gallery to view the final pieces. Final pieces are up around the building in their grade level groups based on the day each class sees me. If you are in the building, please stop by to see our projects. |
Welcome to the art room!!!
After walking into the completely blank canvas that was going to become the new art room, I wasn't sure where to start. After a few weeks I saw a creative space taking shape and now that the school year is officially a few weeks in, I think our art room is becoming the space we need it be, functionally, as well as, inspiring to my students. This space means a lot to me as most of the artwork that decorates it is made by my past middle school students from Grass Lake. They were such an inspiration to me that it was a must that pieces of them come with me. They inspire my new artists every day with the pieces they created over the past 3 years and remind me of the great memories and relationships I was able to create.
It's true...ART is back at NWEL!!
